Paperboard FAQs

Answers to common questions about recycled paperboard, our grades, and how we work with packaging customers.

What is paperboard packaging?

Paperboard packaging is a durable paper-based packaging material used to create cartons and packaging for food, beverage, healthcare, consumer goods, and other products. It is lightweight and versatile, and it can be designed to protect products while supporting brand recognition through high-quality printing.

What is recycled paperboard?

Recycled paperboard is made from recovered paper fibers that are collected, processed, and converted into new packaging materials. Using recycled fibers extends the life of paper resources and supports a circular approach to packaging materials.

Is recycled paperboard as strong as virgin paperboard?

Yes, in nearly all folding carton applications. Multi-ply recycled paperboard is made to be reliable and consistent in performance on high-speed packaging lines, through supply channels and in market. Advances in recycled board production have brought strength and print quality much closer to virgin board, which is why recycled has become a strong choice for most consumer packaging.

Is your MasterWorks recycled paperboard safe for direct food contact?

Our MasterWorks recycled paperboard grades are manufactured to meet FDA and CFIA requirements for food-safe packaging. Contact us for more information.

How much recycled content is in your paperboard?

All PaperWorks paperboard grades are made from 100% recycled fiber, with a minimum 35% post-consumer fiber content.

What’s the difference between coated and uncoated recycled board?

Coated recycled board (CRB) has a clay coating applied to the surface, giving it a clean, print-ready finish suited to high-quality graphics and branding. Uncoated recycled board (URB) performs reliably on automated packaging lines and is best suited for applications where high-end graphics are not the primary focus. We’ll help you match the right grade to your carton’s weight, run speed, and shelf-presentation needs.

What board calipers (thicknesses) do you offer?

We offer calipers from .016 to .036 inches so you can match board weight to your product’s protection and shelf-presentation requirements. Our team can recommend the appropriate paperboard grade and caliper based on your carton size, product weight, and distribution conditions.
